John M. Ryan, Jr. - Esquire

John has been with the firm since 2000. His practice focuses on debt restructuring and commercial litigation, both within and outside of the bankruptcy context. He has substantial experience in the purchase and sale of assets in bankruptcy, the representation of officers, directors, and owners, and in the field of municipal law. Between 1994 and 2000, John served the City of Norfolk, Virginia as an Assistant City Attorney. In this capacity, among a wide array of duties, John served as counsel to Norfolk’s Commissioner of the Revenue, the City Treasurer, and the Lake Taylor Hospital Authority. He worked extensively with the City’s department of city planning and codes enforcement and the department of utilities.

Following graduation from Dartmouth College in 1990, John lived and worked in Kobe, Japan. In 1994, he received his juris doctorate from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law, College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia. He is admitted to practice in Virginia and before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

John is a member of the board of directors of the James Kent American Inns of Court, the Tidewater Bankruptcy Bar Association and the Virginia Stage Company. He attended the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership in 1999-2000, and is a past-president of For Art’s Sake, an affiliate of the Chrysler Museum.

John resides in Norfolk with his wife and baby son. He is an avid surfer and reader, and he also enjoys writing and gardening.
